Amarpur, Tripura | August 23, 2026: The Tripura government has reiterated its commitment to improving the socio-economic conditions of the Bru community by expanding skill development, employment and self-employment opportunities.
At a state-level programme organised by the Directorate of Skill Development at Anandadhara Town Hall in Amarpur, trained members of the Bru community were provided with toolkits to help them make practical use of the skills acquired through vocational training.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said the government is committed to creating opportunities for the Bru community through training and livelihood-oriented interventions. He emphasised that skill development should translate into sustainable employment and self-employment opportunities for beneficiaries.
The distribution of toolkits is significant as it seeks to bridge the gap between skill acquisition and actual livelihood generation. By providing essential equipment after training, beneficiaries can use their newly acquired skills to start or strengthen income-generating activities.
Tripura has been implementing skill-development initiatives specifically targeting members of the resettled Bru community. Government programmes have included training in trades such as electrical work, plumbing, bakery and food preparation, mobile phone repair, tailoring, masonry, handloom and handicrafts, among others.
Earlier government skill-development programmes for the resettled Bru community have also focused on livelihood-oriented activities including poultry, piggery, mushroom cultivation, beekeeping, bamboo handicrafts and handloom weaving.
The broader objective is to ensure that the rehabilitation of the Bru community goes beyond housing and basic amenities and includes sustainable economic opportunities. Skill development, vocational training and support for self-employment are therefore emerging as important components of the rehabilitation and socio-economic integration process.
The government expressed confidence that the toolkit distribution initiative would help beneficiaries move towards greater self-reliance, create new livelihood opportunities and bring positive changes to their families and communities.
