Agartala, September 4, 2026: Four police personnel associated with Bishalgarh Police Station have faced administrative action following allegations surrounding the disappearance of 2.780 kg of gold ornaments during a vehicle search earlier this year.
The matter came under judicial scrutiny after complainant Billal Mia of Madhyapara, Melaghar, approached the Tripura High Court alleging that police personnel had taken possession of the gold during an interception and search of the vehicle in which he was travelling.
According to reports, the alleged incident took place on February 21, 2026, when Mia and his relatives were travelling towards Agartala in a Maruti Eeco bearing registration number TR07EO6360. Mia allegedly told the court that the gold ornaments were being carried for sale to arrange money for the medical treatment of a family member.
High Court orders FIR and Crime Branch investigation
After the complainant alleged that attempts to register a case at the police-station level were unsuccessful, the matter was taken before the Tripura High Court.
On August 18–19, the High Court directed the registration of an FIR and ordered an impartial investigation by a senior officer of the Crime Branch. The court’s intervention came after allegations of police inaction and irregularities surrounding the missing gold.
The official Sepahijala Police website now lists Bishalgarh Police Station Case No. 73/2026, registered on September 1, 2026.
The case has been registered under Sections 126(2), 308(3) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The accused named in the case include then Bishalgarh OC Bijay Das, SI Banijay Reang, SI Supratim Deb and Constable Bahar Mia.
Four personnel face administrative action
The latest development came on September 3, when reports stated that four personnel connected with Bishalgarh Police Station were removed/closed from active duty in connection with the matter.
The personnel identified in reports are Bijay Das, Supratim Deb, Banijay Reang, Supratim Deb and Bahar Mia; however, reports differ on the precise administrative status of individual personnel, with some stating that SI Banijay Reang had earlier been suspended.
The Crime Branch investigation is now expected to establish what happened to the alleged 2.780 kg of gold, whether the ornaments were lawfully seized or documented, and what role—if any—each of the accused personnel played.
Investigation will determine the facts
The allegations against the police personnel have not been established as fact. The High Court’s direction to register an FIR and conduct a Crime Branch investigation does not itself constitute a finding of guilt.
The investigation will be crucial in determining the circumstances of the vehicle interception, the handling of the gold, the existence of any seizure records or other evidence, and the alleged delay in registering the complainant’s case.
The case has meanwhile raised wider questions about police accountability, seizure procedures and the handling of citizens’ complaints, with attention now focused on the findings of the Crime Branch investigation.
