Agartala, August 27, 2026: Tripura recorded a 3.15 per cent increase in tourist arrivals during 2025–26 compared with the previous financial year, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury informed the state Assembly on Thursday.
Responding to questions during the ongoing session of the 13th Tripura Legislative Assembly, Chowdhury said the state received 7,29,414 tourists during 2025–26, including 7,10,243 domestic tourists and 19,171 international visitors. In 2024–25, the state recorded 7,07,173 tourist arrivals, comprising 6,27,705 domestic and 79,468 international tourists.
The Minister said Tripura had recorded 5,45,299 tourist arrivals in 2023–24, indicating a steady increase in overall tourist footfall over the past three financial years.
Highlighting the government’s efforts to strengthen tourism infrastructure, Chowdhury said 12 small and medium tourism destination projects have been completed over the past three years at a total cost of ₹87 crore 87 lakh 42 thousand.
Among the completed projects, four are located in areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). These include the Surma Chhara Destination Development Project in Kamalpur, Abahang Chhara in Santirbazar and wayside amenities at Narikel Kunja in Gandacharra.
Chowdhury further informed the Assembly that five major tourism infrastructure projects involving an investment of more than ₹400 crore are currently under implementation.
The major projects include the 51 Shakti Peetha Park at Banduar in Udaipur, development of Chhabimura, Narkelkunja, the Sonamukhi tourism project in Unakoti and Jirania Park.
The Minister also said that tourism development in the state faces several challenges, including forest clearances, availability of land and funding constraints. He pointed out that several major tourism projects depend on funding and support under central schemes and agencies, including Swadesh Darshan, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and the North Eastern Council (NEC).
During the Assembly discussion, the issue of tourism development in TTAADC areas also came up. Responding to a question from TMP MLA Ranjit Debbarma, Chowdhury said there is currently no proposal to hand over tourism projects developed by the state government to the TTAADC.
He said the government would continue to explore opportunities for tourism development across the state and indicated that the possibility of utilising suitable Forest Department land for tourism infrastructure could also be examined in consultation with the concerned department.
BJP MLA Tafajjal Hossain also raised the potential of Chhabimura and suggested that the large water body adjoining the tourist destination could be brought into the tourism circuit to attract more visitors and generate economic opportunities for local communities.
The figures presented in the Assembly show that Tripura’s tourist arrivals increased from 5,45,299 in 2023–24 to 7,07,173 in 2024–25 and further to 7,29,414 in 2025–26. The government is now focusing on expanding tourism infrastructure and developing religious, eco-tourism, nature and destination-based circuits across the state.
