Tokyo: India’s two-time Olympic medallist P. V. Sindhu scripted history by winning her maiden Japan Open title after defeating home favourite and three-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi in the women’s singles final on Sunday.
Sindhu produced an impressive performance to secure a straight-games victory, winning 21-17, 21-17, and became the first Indian shuttler to lift the Japan Open title. The triumph also marked her first BWF Super 750 title.
The victory ended a title drought of more than two years for the former world champion and is regarded as her biggest achievement on the BWF World Tour since claiming the World Championships crown in 2019. Sindhu displayed aggressive attacking play and maintained control throughout the match against the Japanese star in front of the home crowd.
The landmark victory is expected to boost Sindhu’s confidence ahead of the upcoming major international tournaments, reaffirming her status as one of India’s leading badminton players.
