Guwahati, August 22, 2026: The Governments of Assam and Meghalaya held a joint meeting at the Koinadhara State Guest House on Saturday to review the situation following the incident in Shillong on August 19 and discuss measures to ensure the safety of passengers, tourists and vehicles travelling between the two states.
The meeting was led by Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Dr. S. Dhar and Assam Minister Shri Atul Bora, along with senior officials from both state governments.
15 FIRs Registered, KSU Leaders Arrested
According to the decisions announced after the meeting, 15 FIRs have been registered in connection with the incidents. The President, Vice-President and General Secretary of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) have also been arrested under the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act.
The two governments reiterated that strong legal action would be taken against those found responsible for the violence.
SIT Formed to Investigate Attacks on Vehicles
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to conduct further investigations and pursue prosecution in connection with the incidents.
According to the meeting statement, five masked individuals have been identified, particularly in connection with attacks involving Assam-registered vehicles.
More Than 3,770 Assam Vehicles Escorted to Safety
Ensuring safe passage for people and vehicles emerged as a major priority during the meeting.
More than 3,770 Assam-registered vehicles have reportedly been safely escorted from Meghalaya into Assam. The governments also decided that all remaining stranded passengers and vehicles would be safely escorted to Assam within the next 48 hours.
Dedicated Coordination Mechanism and Helplines
To assist people who may still be stranded or require support, a dedicated coordination mechanism will operate between the IG, Special Branch, Assam, and the IG, Law & Order, Meghalaya.
Dedicated helplines and an online support forum will also be used to help locate and facilitate stranded passengers and other individuals.

Permanent Coordination on Border Issues
The two governments also agreed to establish permanent joint committees involving officials from Nongpoh and Kamrup Metropolitan to address day-to-day inter-state border issues and improve coordination between the neighbouring states.
The mechanism is expected to provide a more structured approach to resolving border-related issues and preventing local disputes from escalating.
Commitment to Tourist and Passenger Safety
Both Assam and Meghalaya reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safe and secure movement of tourists, passengers and vehicles between the two states.
The meeting concluded with a joint emphasis on lawful action, safe transit, effective inter-state coordination and the safety and security of all travellers.
The latest measures come as authorities in both states work to restore normalcy and maintain confidence in movement between Assam and Meghalaya following the Shillong incident of August 19.
