Agartala, September 14: Demanding greater recognition for Tripura’s linguistic and cultural identity, designated members of the Tipra Motha Party have submitted a memorandum to the Airport Director of Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport seeking the introduction of Kokborok-language announcements at the airport.
In the memorandum, the party members stated that Kokborok is one of Tripura’s principal languages and holds significant cultural and historical importance for the indigenous population of the state.
The delegation has urged the airport authorities to introduce Kokborok announcements for flight arrivals and departures, boarding information, baggage-related messages, security instructions, emergency announcements and other essential passenger services, wherever operationally feasible.
The memorandum emphasised that the inclusion of Kokborok would not require replacing the existing languages. Instead, it could be introduced as an additional language in a phased and practical manner.
According to the members, such a move would make important airport information more accessible to Kokborok-speaking passengers while also promoting Tripura’s linguistic heritage and giving visitors arriving at the state’s main airport a glimpse of its cultural identity.
The memorandum was also forwarded to the Chief Secretary of Tripura, Secretary of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for consideration.
The members have appealed to the concerned authorities to examine the demand and take necessary steps to introduce Kokborok announcements at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport at the earliest.
