AGARTALA, SEPTEMBER 29, 2026: A TIPRA Motha Party (TMP) candidate was attacked during polling for the Village Committee elections at Gamaria VC under Matabari RD Block on Monday, September 28.
TMP candidate Kachindra Reang (36) was reportedly shot during the incident at Wareng Bari Ward No. 2 of Gamaria VC. He sustained a gunshot injury to his stomach and was subsequently referred to GB Hospital in Agartala for treatment.
Two TMP supporters, Naithok Jamatia (26) and Udairam Reang (40), were also present during the incident. Udairam Reang sustained a gunshot injury to his leg.
Following the incident, senior TIPRA Motha Party leaders submitted a memorandum to the State Election Commission, Tripura, seeking immediate intervention and necessary action in connection with the attack.
The delegation included TTAADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Runiel Debbarma, Minister Brishaketu Debbarma, MLA Ranjit Debbarma, along with other MLAs and MDCs of the party.
The TMP leaders urged the State Election Commission to ensure immediate action by the police and local administration and sought adequate security for the injured candidate, his family, candidates and party workers in the area.
The party also called for enhanced security deployment in and around Gamaria VC to prevent further violence, intimidation or retaliation following the polling.
TMP stated that an FIR has already been lodged with the local police station in connection with the incident.
The incident comes amid heightened tension surrounding the 2026 TTAADC Village Committee elections, with the party calling for immediate measures to ensure the safety of candidates and political workers.
