Agartala, August 29: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Saturday called for greater youth participation in sports, stressing that sporting activities play an important role in developing discipline, confidence and ethical values.
Dr. Saha was addressing the state-level National Sports Day programme at the Badharghat Sports Complex. Youth Affairs & Sports Minister Tinku Roy was also present at the event.
A key highlight of the programme was the unveiling of a statue of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha at the sports complex. The event was attended by Ashok Kumar, Olympian and Arjuna Award-winning hockey player and son of Major Dhyan Chand, whose presence added special significance to the celebrations.
The Chief Minister said the state government, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is working to create greater opportunities for athletes and strengthen sports infrastructure in Tripura. He also urged young people to actively pursue sports to contribute towards building a healthy and strong society.
Sports Minister Tinku Roy highlighted the government’s sports infrastructure initiatives, including 16 synthetic-turf football grounds and 20 natural-grass football grounds across the state. He also outlined plans for youth hostels, indoor halls, sports hostels and a dedicated gymnastics coaching centre.
National Sports Day is observed every year on August 29, marking the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand and celebrating India’s sporting spirit.
