SONAMURA, TRIPURA | SEPTEMBER 30, 2026: A joint team of the Border Security Force (BSF), Customs Department and Tripura Police seized Bangladeshi currency with a face value of ৳24.50 lakh during an operation in the Matinagar area under Sonamura Police Station in Sepahijala district on Tuesday.
The operation was conducted following specific intelligence inputs, according to Customs officials. Personnel of the 81 Battalion BSF, along with Customs officials and Sonamura Police, intercepted an Eeco vehicle near a BSF camp at around 11:30 AM.
ONE PERSON DETAINED
The person detained in connection with the seizure was identified as Tapas Sarkar, a resident of North Kalamchowra under Kalamchowra Police Station.
There is conflicting reporting regarding his age: one report identifies him as 30, while other reports give his age as 38. Therefore, the age has been omitted here pending official confirmation.
The vehicle involved was identified in multiple reports as an Eeco bearing registration number TR01BZ0219. The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Bishalgarh towards Sonamura when it was intercepted.
INVESTIGATION INTO SOURCE AND DESTINATION OF MONEY
According to preliminary information reported from the investigation, the currency was allegedly being transported from Bishalgarh towards Sonamura. Local reports have further named Suman Saha of Bishalgarh as the alleged source and Zakir and Bahab Mia of Kulubari as the intended recipients. These details remain subject to investigation and have not been established as facts by a court.
Sonamura Customs Superintendent Alok Kumar said the operation was carried out on the basis of specific intelligence regarding the movement of a large quantity of Bangladeshi currency.
Officials are investigating the source of the currency, its intended purpose and whether other individuals were involved in its movement. Authorities are also examining whether the money may have entered India through an unauthorised route along the international border.

CUSTODYFollowing the seizure, the detained person, the recovered currency and the vehicle were taken into the custody of Sonamura Customs for further legal proceedings and investigation.
The case remains under investigation, and further details are expected to emerge regarding the source and intended destination of the Bangladeshi currency.
