Agartala, August 29, 2026:During the 10th Session of the 13th Tripura Legislative Assembly, Ramchandraghat MLA Ranjit Debbarma raised several questions concerning higher education, illegal sand extraction and pending court cases involving the state government.
Among the issues raised by the MLA were:
🏫 No Current Plan for College in Ramchandraghat
Debbarma asked whether the state government has any plan to establish a General Degree College in the Ramchandraghat Assembly constituency.
In its reply, the Higher Education Department stated that there is currently no plan to establish a General Degree College in Ramchandraghat.
He also asked about establishing a technical education institution in the constituency. The government similarly replied that the Higher Education Department currently has no such plan.
🎓 Engineering College and English-Medium College at Khumulung
Debbarma also questioned whether the government has plans to establish an Engineering College and an English-medium college at Khumulung, the headquarters of the TTAADC.
The government replied that there is presently no plan with the Higher Education Department to establish either institution at Khumulung.
⚖️ 1,073 Cases Pending Against State Government
In another question to the Law Department, Debbarma sought details of cases pending against the Tripura government in the courts as of June 30, 2026.
According to the government’s reply:
– Supreme Court of India: 322 cases
– High Court of Tripura: 751 cases
This puts the total at 1,073 pending cases before the two courts.
⛏️ Illegal Sand Extraction Across Several Areas
Debbarma also raised the issue of illegal sand extraction in the state.
According to the Forest Department’s reply, reports of illegal sand extraction have been received from several subdivisions, including:
– Sonamura: 8 locations
– Bishalgarh: 7 locations
– Kailashahar and Dharmanagar: some locations
– Kumarghat:1 location
– Manu: 3 locations
– Khowai: 6 locations
– Sadar: some locations
– Amarpur: some locations
– Bagafa, Sabroom and parts of the surrounding areas: reports of illegal extraction
The department stated that forest personnel are conducting regular patrolling, while machinery and vehicles involved in illegal sand extraction are being seized and fines imposed.
The questions highlight concerns over educational infrastructure in tribal areas, legal cases involving the state government and the continuing problem of illegal sand extraction in Tripura.
