Kangpokpi, Manipur | August 31, 2026: Fresh violence erupted in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Monday morning after suspected armed militants opened fire at N Teikhang, a Kuki-inhabited village under T Waichong subdivision, killing civilians and injuring several others.
The attack reportedly took place at around 9:30 AM, when armed assailants opened fire on residents using sophisticated weapons. Several houses were also reportedly set ablaze during the attack, forcing villagers to flee their homes and take shelter in nearby forest areas.
Three Reportedly Killed, Four Injured
While initial reports citing district officials put the death toll at two, newer reports from local sources have reported that three villagers were killed and four others sustained bullet injuries.
The deceased have been identified in reports as Lamtinthang Lhoujem, 35, Tingneichin Lhouvum and Hoineng Lhoujem. The injured reportedly include 65-year-old Seilun Lhoujem, along with Nemneichong Lhoujem, Deilhing Lhoujem and Kamtinsei Chongloi.
Because casualty figures are still developing, the final toll may require further confirmation from authorities.
Villagers Flee as Houses Are Set Ablaze
The sudden firing reportedly sent panic through the village, with residents escaping towards nearby forests for safety.
Several houses were reportedly torched during the incident. Reports also indicated that an exchange of fire between armed groups from the two communities was taking place in and around the area.
Security forces were rushed to the village to contain the situation and restore security.
Suspected Groups Named in Local Reports
Some local reports have alleged that cadres linked to NSCN-IM and ZUF-K were involved in the attack. However, these allegations have not been independently established, and the identities and affiliations of the attackers remain subject to investigation.
Fresh Escalation Along the IT Road Corridor
The incident has raised renewed concerns over civilian safety along the Imphal–Tipaimukh (IT) Road corridor, where violence has intensified in recent days.
The latest attack comes only days after an ambush in Kangpokpi district in which four Naga civilians were killed and another person was injured. That incident had already heightened tensions between Naga and Kuki communities in the region.
The continuing violence has left communities in several remote areas facing growing security concerns, disruption to movement and difficulties accessing essential services.
Authorities are expected to continue security operations in the affected area as efforts are made to prevent further escalation.
